Let’s Talk About Pressure

This may seem a bit morbid, but bear with me.

I just recently started reading a book called, Crazy Love, by Francis Chan and in it I came across something interesting that so perfectly describes the point of life, yet so purposefully distains how most people go about their life.

Throughout time, somewhere between forty-five billion and one hundred twenty-five billion people have lived on this earth. That’s 125,000,000,000. In about fifty years (give or take a couple of decades), no one will remember you. Everyone you know will be dead. Certainly no one will care what job you had, what car you drove, what school you attended, or what clothes you wore. This can be terrifying or reassuring, or maybe a mix of both.”

-Francis Chan

I’ll give you a second to let that thought sink in. Read it again, and really let it reach your heart, but most importantly let it reach your soul.

An inconspicuous concept right? Perhaps, one so crazy we don’t ever think about. A thought that makes social media, pressure on what to do in life, and how others perceive you suddenly unimportant. It makes you feel small, and small you are.

The truth is, our life is nothing but a second in the eyes of time. Scary and terrifying yes, but also how much relief does that produce? To know that what you have or don’t yet have, what you look like, or don’t look like, what job you have or what school you attend, or how many likes you get on your Instagram post won’t simply matter when you’re dead. They are irrelevant in the eyes of time, yet so present in the eyes of society.

Society tell us: Look this way if you want to be perceived as ‘perfect’. Attend this university if you want to be well off in life. Wear that brand of clothing to fit in. Don’t take a gap year, or else you’ll fall behind. The list goes on. Do all these things in order to be successful and gain the approval of others.

When in reality, non of the above statements are true. If we truly think about our life and refer back to the quote we just read.

Pressure from society has become inundated in our daily lives and it controls us more than we know. My hope is this. You take a look at yourself in the mirror know that you are designed for something special, something different. Know that just because you don’t fit into the ‘box’ society has created to be the stereotype on life in order to be successful doesn’t mean a damn thing.

Your life is unique go live it. Wear your hair in a messy bun, post on Instagram as many times in a day you want, attend the smaller school, take a gap year. It’s the least you can do.
